Even though trees lie dormant in winter, they still face stress from cold and dry conditions, with lack of water often being the most damaging factor. Dry roots going into winter can cause trees to weaken and even die by late summer, so they need your care even when the weather looks bleak.
Here’s how to help your trees thrive through winter:
Winter Watering Tips
When to water: Keep watering regularly through the fall until the ground freezes. During winter, water on mild days (above 40°F) when the ground is free of snow and ice, aiming for once or twice a month.
How to water: Water slowly and deeply to reach the tree’s roots, ideally with a soaker hose. Young trees need more frequent watering, while established trees should be watered out to the edge of their root spread.
Timing matters: Water early in the day to allow absorption before evening temperatures drop.
Don’t Skip the Mulch
A layer of organic mulch helps retain soil moisture and regulates temperature, protecting roots from freezing and thawing cycles. Add mulch in the fall to shield your trees through the winter.
Special Care for Evergreens
Evergreen trees lose water through their needles during dry winter months. Provide extra water in fall and during winter dry spells to prevent damage from cold winds that strip away moisture.
Your Trees Will Thank You
Winter care might seem unnecessary, but a little attention now ensures your trees stay healthy and strong, rewarding you with vibrant growth in spring.
